12 Years a Slave Wins Six Awards from the NC Film Critics Association
Seven Other Films Had Multiple Nominations Without a Single Win
Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave dominated the second annual Best in Cinema Awards presented by the North Carolina Film Critics Association (NCFCA). Earning wins in every category nominated, 12 Years a Slave took home six honors including Best Narrative Film, Best Director (Steve McQueen), Best Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender), Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o), and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley). Eight films earned multiple nominations including The Wolf of Wall Street (5), American Hustle and Nebraska (4 each), yet 12 Years a Slave was the only film to earn more than one award this year.
Monsters University and Stories we Tell won for Best Animation and Best Documentary, respectively. Cate Blanchett earned a Best Actress honor for her work in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine; the Coen Brothers picked up a Best Original Screenplay award for Inside Lewyn Davis, and The Way Way Back was selected for the Tarheel Award, recognizing a film or filmmaker with a North Carolina connection.
