Roma Wins Four North Carolina Film Critics Association Honors
Best Picture, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography
After being previously nominated from the North Carolina Film Critics Association (NCFCA) for his work on Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma was the big winner for the sixth annual Best in Cinema awards honors. The foreign language film took top honors for Best Narrative Film, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography.
Roma, along with If Beale Street Could Talk were the most nominated films this year with six each. If Beale Street Could Talk earned wins for Best Supporting Actress Regina King and Best Adapted Screenplay for Barry Jenkins. Jenkins received previous nominations for his work as writer and director for Moonlight.
Two other films had multiple wins, Black Panther and The Favourite. Michael B. Jordan won Best Supporting Actor for Black Panther, and the film also earned a Best Special Effects award. The Favourite took home honors for Best Actress Olivia Coleman and Best Original Screenplay.
Ethan Hawke is a three-time NCFCA nominee and won this year’s Best Actor award for First Reformed. He was previously nominated for Boyhood and Before Midnight.
Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse took home Best Animated Film, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor was selected as Best Documentary.
The NCFCA consists of forty-two film critics/journalists established in North Carolina or those serving North Carolina-based outlets. Recognition was granted to films and performers in sixteen categories. Below you will find the full list of winners and nominees:

- This year the Coen Brothers earned their 3rd nomination. Previous nominations were for Inside Lewyn Davis, Bridge of Spies.

- This year marks Emma Stone’s third nomination. She was previously recognized for her performances in Birdman and La La Land.
